  • Good day, bad day.  Dunno la.  I think good day... but I lost my Timberland bag containing my cycling shoes and USPS shorts which I was going to bring to bike shop in case I cycle back from after picking up the bag, but instead left in the MRT after... okay never mind.  Just as I was writing this, the Sembawang MRT station has called up and someone has returned my package.  Going to collect later.

Full story is I was carrying three bags, including the Kinokuniya bag that I just went shopping with and realize I left it only after walking out of Bishan MRT station.

Good day because I got to swim today and I stuck to my lane despite some true idiots who just came into my lane after I have done 20 laps and what?  Expect me to give way?  With a longer reach and glide, I can afford to "poke" at the idiot while he struggles with his pull.  I pity the other lady who was swimming in the lane next to me; she was doing constant pace long distance swimming also and another true idiot just took her lane four then she switched to lane two and later the three idiots who tried to take over my lanes took over hers but she was still going strong in one of the half-lanes, but I think she finally gave up.  I really cannot believe the audicity of these true idiots who doesn't bother looking at whether anyone is already swimming on a particular lane and still expect people to give way to them.

And I'm faster, which also gives me the advantage of coming from behind then KICKING real hard.  Apparently they do that in triathlons to idiots they wanna sabo.

Then I went straight to gym and started Spinning class.  Whoa!  Felt the legs immediately and switched to lower gear, and even then had to stand up for the first few minutes.  The quads are totally out of condition and too painful to cycle seated yet maintaining wattage, but standing on the same gearing I could maintain it comfortably, and then sit for a while then stand again.  Overall I thought the swim-bike transition was quite bad but surprisingly I still managed a 160bpm heartrate for the 50mins on the bike.  Will have to work more on this swim-bike transition.

As I was preparing to leave gym, a lady in front of me was filling up bottle (long time) then my turn to drink and then caught her eye and she smiled and I smiled and apparently it was the lady spinning next to me yesterday.  I spoke to her about pulling because she was using really huge gearings - 50rpm while standing and 60rpm while seated - and yeap, we recognized each other today.  No one else pushes gearings like me in spinning class so in a way, I'm kinda the only high gearing low cadence expert - which is frown upon coz they say such low cadence could spoil the knees and stuff.  I find that's bullshit.  High cadence actually spoils the knees, as I normally find after spinning 150rpms on the bike (that's 150 revolutions per min), which I only do during recovery days and wanna get in rounded-cycling form.

So anyway I was telling her about the "pull" when using high gears, and demonstrated to her and ...

Went to Kinokuniya and yesterday (bad day) had this idiot squating and reading book in front of section I was browsing.  Couldn't find what I need but I thought he might be holding the book I wanted.  True enough, today (good day) when I went back, I found exactly the book I needed for triathlon (Ironman Distance) and picked it up immediately.

Later going to meet the Xangarians.  Hmm... should I bathe before I go?  Haha.  Kidding (in case anyone still reading this before the 4pm meetup).

  • Bike is in the bike shop.  Don't feel like the Ultra Marathon today.  So I'm nua-ing at home.  Maybe will go for swim later.

Caught Lord Of The Rings last evening.  Soloist stuck between two couples.  I wonder if the lady on the left was playing to get her bf jealous or something.  She'd be like ignoring him and stuffs and when he turns a cold she'll snuggle up to him, and then after a while, repeats.  I could even see his body reacting from my side and after the big battle ended with the ghosts led by Aragon, think he even moved forward to catch my eye.

I don't mind being used.  Kinda gotten used to it.

Normally won't catch soloist movie on weekends coz this kinda stuff happens but I don't have much time so whenever I can I will stuff in a movie or whatever I need to do.  Normally though, I'm stuck between two guys so today was kinda weird.  And no, it's not my imagination.  On a side note, I prob shouldn't wear tight-fitting shorts to a three and half hour movie but hey, I just came from gym next door, spinning class.  Underwear was smelly though coz I forgot to bring change, in my haste to rush down from bike shop to home to Heeren.

Didn't feel like eating much at Marche but I tried to force myself to eat, in the midst of mingling around with my cycling team mates, who had arranged for this lunch meeting to end the year.

Bike is still in repair, in the bike shop after I cycled in the morning, predominantly in 53x15 singlegear until later when I managed to force the shifters to change the gears.  I think I got the hang of the Sembawang area.  Rode up to Mandai, along the way meeting two ANZA guys (father and young son - 10 years of age?) at Upper Seletar Reservoir.  Decided to turn right instead of the normal left route to see where it led to and yeah, know the roads better now.  I went on till I reached Yishun, then went on straight coz the road was so nice and I was hitting a very nice speed too until I got to Lower Seletar Reservoir, then at the end of that road there's a turning into some country club, then I went on, on that winding road in singlegear till the end and there was this tiny little road that led to Jalan Kayu.  I went in slightly but turned back coz the road was getting too rugged for my road bike.  Remembered this road from my first BOAC outing and it's nice.

Same route back and through to Mandai where I suddenly had four riders coming past me - was I going that slow?  But on the downhill I could go faster with my constant pace cycling and drafted behind them for a while, then they stopped at the Shell station and I went on to Lim Chu Kang.  Did a pretty good speed there too in spite of feeling legs totally burnt out, maybe coz a big truck was in front not too far away so I caught it's draft.  On the way out to Bukit Timah, noticed a lady rider in triathlon bike... and I only realize it or maybe imagination again, but she was in swimsuit.  In the middle of road??!?  Just came from swim-bike transition training?  But swimsuit?  I was too dazed to notice it then, only like after 10sec passed liao then notice.  Slow reaction.  Brain not working.  URGH!

    Wasted.

Kekeke.  Anyway from there I headed down to the east, and had breakfast at McDonalds at East Coast Parkway.  Rode to bike shop and left bike there, and rushed for my lunch with cycling buddies.

  • Good night, world.  It's been sweet, but lonely too. *hugs*

    To a better tomorrow.

  • Faster, stronger, longer.  No this is not an advertisment for my new gigolo career  90 laps in 1hr 30mins due to three things

    1.  I was using a "glide" tri pants and swimming cap to swim; but this didn't make me feel significantly faster
    2.  I was kicking off when I reached the side of the pool, then using the front crawl kick to get maximum distance while gliding out the first 15m of the pool.
    3.  My kick timing has changed to maximize my glide.  This has the most effect I feel, as I have already changed this since Sun and have felt that I have gone significantly faster.  I have switched back to glide-more-pull-less, yet still getting faster timing.

Not going to Kulai after an invite from Samuel because of shifters spoilt and I tried to get new shifters in before last evening but couldn't so went for swim as planned beforehand.  Sad, like he said, when I can go he can't, and when he can I can't.  Hopefully next week we can make it to Batam together on Sun.

I now know who was his training partner at Batam - Woon Lip, or Lippy, who was also at last Sun's ride and definitely holding back as he gentlemanly stayed behind and helped the Canadian lady (while I ungentlemanly, sped off to join the front group).

Okay... going out to get some milage on the bike now.  Singlespeeder... or two gears rather (53x15 and 39x15 for those who know what they mean).

  • Training log: Burning 4000kcals does NOT permit one to eat as much as one does afterwards.

Took nasi lemak, big portion, this morning.  Now feel the stomach growing already.  Urgh.

  • Been a bad day.  Started off with Joyce in the morning with her new bike, and still feeling lethargic.  Couldn't get heartrate up beyond 130 plus.  Did about more than 30km, going up Thomson to Sembawang, met up with Cheap John guys who were heading to Kota Tinggi but we didn't bring passport (plus Joyce had to meet hubby n kids for church) so we went on with this MTBer whom we passed along the way.  Ended up in Woodlands then back in the reverse way we normally go via Mandai.  Back in time to meet the Thomson riders, and surprisingly Esther was there.  Samuel was there too; he had SMS-ed me the evening before to join ride.

With the Thomson guy, I managed to push HR up to 170, kinda breaking a barrier which after that allowed me to continue pushing at 155-160, which is the norm.  Group One broke off after a traffic light, while we got stuck behind and losing more time at the Shell station.  Seems like the rest are doing a short loop and I ended up being the only one who went the full length.  During the ride passed a number of triathletes training, including Yusran whom we met at the KL Titiwangsa Tri (went up with Tribob together).  Saw Esther coming back from the other way.  So I turned around and joined her too, and chatted a while, then I sped off.

Bad luck started when earlier I had problems moving gears up beyond cogset 15, and now it started getting worse; when I move them down they won't even move back to 15.  My highest gear is 11 and I normally use 12 or 11 going downhill.  Spent some frustrating time trying to get it working to no avail and in the end went from Bt Timah back to Joyce's place.  Fortunately I got the shifters stuck in 15 because at the lower gears it's even harder to go.  Kinda like running on gear one on the Expressway, get the idea?  But I still ended with shoulder aches, and a lot of frustrations.

Esther was packing her stuffs at Joyce's place where she parked her car but Joyce not in.  Thought of taking a lift from Esther to East and get the shifters changed but bike didn't look like it'll fit in.  End up going home... and realizing I left my keys in the bag which is at Joyce's place.  Rang the bell... no one in.  SMS Joyce.  SOS.

Went for food even though not hungry, but I've burnt 2800kcals already by now.  Cycled down past Cycleworx... closed.  So I went down East thru Balestiar and ended up doing some loops at Kallang as I tried some shortcuts which didn't work.  To check out Trek3 (closed), CannAsia (closed), SingleTrek (closed) and Rodalink East (closed).  Just as I was about to move out of Rodalink, Joyce called and said she just finished service, heading home.  So I rode back reverse way, via Kallang, up Braddel.  Hit a full century (that's 100 miles) cycle.  Showered (cold water, even though there was hot water) and watched a bit of Fear Factor then came back.  Prob will sleep a bit now before heading back to Joyce's place for dinner - Esther, Hairul, KK and some friends of Joyce's family will be joining.

  • Christmas eve.  Home.

Wanted to go swim but felt I haven't recovered enough and it'll be a waste of effort.

One day to the exact date Constance and me never spoke again.  Maybe I should take Wham!'s advise and give it to someone special, but I don't think I'll ever find anyone as special as you.

  • I'm in bite-off-everyone's-head mood.  I should prob hang a KEEP AWAY!  sign on myself now.

Urgh, the terrible feelings of recovery... maybe I will pamper myself with a massage later.

  • Computer hang this morning - dying?  Blog was lost as I didn't manage to save on time.  Ulcer in the lips since Sun got painful today.  Recovery from training is, as usual, much more painful than workout.  I read something about it but can't remember now.  Just kinda got used to it by now.  Something to do with the lactic acid which accumulates in the body, which is why a very easy ride (recovery ride) also known as active recovery - will help to get rid of excess lactic acid in the body.  Second day now and yesterday's shopping didn't help.  I might take tomorrow off too, depending on condition as still really tired today and can't tell; muscles are totally stiff.

Somehow got communicated with Leeson, one of my best friends whom I know from #mp3files, and both of us have not watched Lord Of The Rings, and he was in the vicinity so we decided to meet up for dinner and LOTR.  Unfortunately after going through 4 cinemas we still couldn't get tickets, so end up going shopping at Suntec.  I was too tired, so went back by cab.  Maybe will meet him again today.

I haven't done my Christmas shopping AT ALL!!!  So I will need all the time to grab as many things as possible in the shortest possible time.  Anyway this evening I got nothing on so can take the whole afternoon and evening to shop but hopefully it doesn't come to that.  Also hope to catch as many movies as I can while I'm off training, including and especially LOTR.

  • Okay, I am officially overtrained.  Pushed really hard this morning on the bike ride and thought I was going fast but heartrate monitors do not lie and neither do speedometers.  As I speeded down Bukit Timah, I glanced at my HRM and surprise surprise... 133bpm.  Looked at the speedo... 30kmh.  *faints*  I push as hard as I could and got it only up to 140bpm, 33kmh (and I think that's downhill!).  That's it.  Break time.  No cycling or swimming for the next two days.

Last evening David Tay put us through swimming intervals.  Very tough for me, especially since he tried to make us swim front crawl as much as possible, with some compromise.  On another note, there is another guy swimming breaststroke and I learnt quite a bit from him.  As for swimming (both frontcrawl and breaststroke) I started out very much slower than the rest but eventually picked up speed.  Very slow means 4 laps people finish already I'm just about to start my 4th.  Then one guy suggested I swim next to the breaststroke guy (Joseph) and I noted I was gliding too much, so while still gliding I pulled a lot more also, and yes!  My speed almost matches his (in fact at the end of 4 laps I have to slow down to let him finish first).

But it was very very tough, especially on the frontcrawl, for me.  I have very laboured breathing even before the 2/3 of the lap and struggle to just breathe for a while before finishing.  Surprise surprise... before 1/2 pool I am faster on the front crawl though than most, because we were not supposed to breathe for the first 6 or 8 cycles (I only managed 6 cycles).  Of course, after 2/3 I die off but still finish off decently, except totally out of breath.

It was so bad that I couldn't eat until much later, even in the evening when I slept, my breathing was still very quick and fast, though deep.
